Natural Skin Care

In July I will be at the end of my 40’s. As I get older, I continue to notice how caring for my skin needs changing. In my mid 30’s I noticed how it became harder and harder to keep my skin moisturized. It was much easier to accomplish with my youthful skin so I wasn’t prepared for this sudden change. Add hard water to the problem and it was all downhill from there. No matter the brand of lotion I tried nothing would cure the problem. After a lot of research I turned to using homemade creams as well as hair and body oils to get that locked in moisture I was craving. Here is my go to recipes I have been using for a couple of decades now:

Hair and Body Oil

2-3 oz. Olive Oil (Extra Virgin is great)
2 oz. Jojoba Oil
2 oz. Argan Oil
1oz. Avocado Oil
1oz. Castor Oil (I use regular or JBCO)
1oz. Sweet Almond Oil
5 drops Vitamin E oil
10 drops Essential Oil (like Lavender, lemon, or any scent you prefer)

Directions:

In an 8 oz. applicator bottle (mine has measurements on the back) pour in the oils one at a time using a funnel. Screw on the top, cover tip with your finger, and shake to mix the oils together.

To use

Immediately after showering I just towel dry and rub some of this oil onto my skin while my pores are still open. As your skin finish drying the oils will get absorbed (locked) in and helps to keep it soft and moisturized for a good while. There’s no need to worry about being oily because our skin absorbs these oils very well. For even more locked in moisture I like to use this oil in conjunction with my Shealoe mix (see below).

*Note: A little of this goes a LONG way. You won’t have to use much to get the job done. I sometimes change up the essential oil to create a different smell. This hair and body oil is also great for doing hot oil treatments on your hair.

Shealoe (aka Body Butter)

8 oz. raw unrefined Shea Butter (yellow or white)
1/4 cup Coconut Oil (Extra Virgin is great)
1/4-1/3 cup Aloe Vera Gel
a few drops of essential oil(s) of your choice (A combo I like is sweet orange and grapefruit or lemon and lavender)

Directions:

The Shea Butter and coconut oil works best if it’s softened (not completely melted). You can soften some in your microwave or in a bowl over boiling water (think double boiler setup). Mix all the ingredients in a bowl with a mixer or a mini food processor until it’s fluffy or looks the consistency of whipped cake frosting. I store mine in smaller containers. I put them in the fridge for a bit to solidify then I just store at room temp to use daily. A batch this size lasts me months before I need to make more.

**Note: The great thing about both of these recipes is that you can add to or subtract to fit your own personal preference. My whole family uses them along with me. I love that I can use both products on my hair (Shealoe can be used for setting my curls) and body since I know what I’ve put in them.

The Christian Homemaker

Have you been asked by well meaning ladies (even Christian), “what do you do all day”? The side eyed looks, and shaking of the head as if you’ve done a horrible sin is truly disrespectful to your freedom to choose what’s best for your own life and family. No where in the bible is it condemned or forbidden for a woman to not work outside her home. Throughout scripture you see the opposite yet many try to pull the old Proverbs 31 woman card (and any other scripture to justify their thinking) to make you think otherwise. Many have taken scriptures out of context to come up with unbiblical thinking on this issue. It’s really sad how we as homemakers are questioned and judged (instead of respected and encouraged) for our choice to make being a keeper at home our fulltime career. We’ve all heard the “what ifs” and all the exceptions but we have our convictions and we live this life by faith. Listen to the wisdom in this young lady. She’s wise beyond her years.

Here is another one that encourages even those of us who do not or no longer are raising young children:

Biblical Motherhood

Here is a description of how biblical motherhood looks to me. These are not the only scriptures that is the picture of mothering God’s way. These are a few of what I keep coming back to and continue to strive for as a bible believing mom. I pray you will ponder these things. Let’s ask for help from the Holy Spirit to be the type of mothers God has called us to be. No matter the age of our children, we can continue to grow as godly mothers through each stage.

Proverbs 31:25-30 (KJV)

25. Strength and honour are her clothing;
and she shall rejoice in time to come.
26. She openeth her mouth with wisdom;
and in her tongue is the law of kindness.
27. She looketh well to the ways of her household,
and eateth not the bread of idleness.
28. Her children arise up, and call her blessed;
her husband also, and he praiseth her.
29. Many daughters have done virtuously,
but thou excellest them all.
30. Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain:
but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised.

Proverbs 14:1 (KJV)

Every wise woman buildeth her house: but the foolish plucketh it down with her hands.

We must have teachable spirits

I love learning about Biblical Womanhood from older but wise women. I’m very careful who I let in my ear because I want what I’m being taught to be only what God’s will is for me. He has already laid that out in scripture. As a young wife and mother I had no one around to teach me what that was. None of the women in my family want or desire to be biblical women. Even in church it was hard to find older women who fit within the Titus 2 description.

It took lots of prayer and searching. I’m thankful that God eventually led me to older wiser women online and later at a different church who I could learn from. We must bend to the will of our heavenly Father. We must embrace the roles that God has designed for us women no matter what the culture says. We are not our own if we are professing believers. God has a plan for His children’s lives. Not our will but His will be done in us.

Homemaker’s Creed

I wonder if this creed is available somewhere to hang on a homemakers wall. I love the old ways and reminders of old-fashioned life when times were much simpler and homemakers weren’t looked down upon.
